Environmental sustainability is an everyday business practice at Wagner. We've been implementing green business practices since 2004 when we first participated in the state of Wisconsin's "Focus on Energy" program. Working with WMEP Manufacturing Solutions, Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council (WSBC) and other organizations, Wagner has upgraded our facilities, as well as our manufacturing equipment, and continues to look for new ways to become a more sustainable company. We also offer products and components that qualify for LEED credits.
Some of our most notable accomplishments towards becoming a leading sustainability-focused manufacturer include:
1. Eliminating our waterjet services in favor of fiber lasers. Waterjet cutting is an energy-intensive process and produced over 60 tons of landfill waste each year. Our lasers have reduced production times and improved raw material utilization while producing zero landfill waste.
2. Eliminating our foam packaging systems and switching to an air pouch system. We now use a lot less material in our packaging processes. The air pouches are made from 95% pre-consumer recycled content. This switch helped us to reduce our material in landfills by 900+ cubic feet annually.
3. Replacing nearly all metal halide and high-pressure sodium lights with LEDs. This reduced our energy consumption by nearly 30,000-kilowatt hours annually. This simple switch decreased air pollution and environmental damage of carbon dioxide by approximately 41,500 pounds, sulfur dioxide by 70,000 grams and nitrogen oxides by 160,000 grams. Removing those quantities of pollutants has the same effect on the environment as planting five acres of trees!
Wagner has achieved "Green Apprentice" status in the Green Masters Program—an assessment and recognition program for Wisconsin businesses interested in improving their sustainability performance. This program also allows organizations to benchmark their performance against others in the same industry. The Green Masters Program has defined sustainability through nine key areas and all participants need to take at least one action in each of the areas in order to obtain and retain their status. Through this program, we have identified our strengths while generating ideas for additional ways to improve sustainability. We're happy to be a part of the Green Masters Program and use their standards to drive us to be a more sustainable business.
