The Mason City High School Fieldhouse and Natatorium brings together athletic competition, recreation and community engagement within a modern, multi-purpose facility. Elevated viewing areas, spectator seating sections and circulation routes required railing systems that could balance safety, durability and unobstructed visibility.
To complement the building's design while addressing critical safety requirements, Wagner provided a comprehensive railing solution featuring glass guardrails, custom stainless steel assemblies and illuminated handrails.
In the natatorium, PanelGrip® glass railings surround elevated spectator seating and upper-level viewing areas. The assemblies feature aluminum base shoe with stainless steel cladding and top rails, preserving open views while providing dependable fall protection.
Wagner also fabricated and installed custom two-line stainless steel aisle railings between seating rows, helping visitors navigate the stands safely while maintaining visual openness throughout the seating area.
In the fieldhouse, Wagner supplied glass railing systems featuring Lumenrail® illuminated handrails with Lumenpod® 28 point source lighting at a 4000K color temperature. Mounted using stainless steel glass-mounted handrail brackets, the illuminated handrails integrate seamlessly with the surrounding glass railing, preserving the open feel of the space. Positioned alongside a wall of expansive windows, the illuminated LED assembly becomes especially striking at dusk, adding both functional and visual value to the space.
Wagner Installation Services supported the project with field measurement and laser-scanning services, capturing precise site dimensions prior to fabrication. This approach minimized dimensional uncertainty, reduced on-site modifications and helped streamline installation.
The installation also features a unique safety-focused design at locations where the aisle railings intersect with the perimeter guardrails. At these transition points, the glass panels extend above the standard guardrail height, providing additional fall protection adjacent to the stair aisles while maintaining visual continuity throughout the seating area.
Constructed with 316 stainless steel components, including top rails, flanges, handrail brackets and custom-fabricated assemblies, the railing systems are designed to withstand demanding athletic and aquatic environments. Glass stiffeners and PanelGrip mounting components further contribute to a stable, coordinated railing solution that balances performance and design.
By combining PanelGrip® aluminum base shoe moulding, custom stainless steel fabrication and installation services, Wagner delivered railing solutions that support life safety while preserving clear sightlines. From the natatorium's elevated viewing areas to the fieldhouse's illuminated stair connections, the completed railing systems support safe movement throughout the facility while keeping spectators connected to the moments that matter most.
